About Kedarnath

Kedarnath one of the most sacred pilgrimage of Lord Shiva twelve Jyotirlingas, is situated in Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand. Kedarnath is one of the Chardhams and is situated at an altitude of 3586 mts, in the lap of the majestic mountain peaks and near the head of river Mandakini. It is set amidst the stunning mountains cape of the Himalayas and at the head of the Mandakini River. Kedar is another name of lord Shiva, the protector and the destroyer. The temple is a 17km trek from Gaurikund. The ideal time for the pilgrimage to Kedarnath is from May to October. During the winters, the idols from Kedarnath and Madhyamaheshwar are brought to Ukhimath and worshipped there for six months. The exquisite architecture Kedarnath temple is believed to be more than 1000 years old. The temple is built from evenly cut huge grey stones evoking wonders about the ancient craftsmanship.

Gaurikund is the point where the road to Kedarnath ends and the trek of 17km begins. Gaurikund is well connected by motorable roads with major destinations of Uttarakhand and northern states of India. Buses and Taxis to Gaurikund are easily available from major destinations of Uttarakhand like Dehradun, Rishikesh, Haridwar, Srinagar etc. Gaurikund lies on National Highway 107 which connects Rudraprayag with Kedarnath.

Rishikesh Railway Station is the nearest railway head from Kedarnath. Located about 210 km from Gaurikund, Rishikesh Railway Station is well connected to almost all the major cities of India and has a regular trains on a daily basis. From Rishikesh, one can take a bus to Gaurikund.

Jolly Grant Airport Dehradun is the nearest civil airhead. Located around 250 km from Kedarnath, Jolly Grant Airport is connected to the major cities of India including New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai. There are plenty of flights operating to and fro from these cities and provide a lot of options in terms of flight timing and fares. Almost all the major airlines have flights to Jolly Grant Airport. Once you are in Dehradun, you can either take a bus or hire a cab to reach Kedarnath.
